The Islands is one of Gilbert's original lake communities, with about 2,600 homes built mostly from the mid-1980s through the 1990s around three boatable lakes. Around 400 homes sit right on the water, and the rest line greenbelts, parks and walking paths. Many of the original homes are now 30 to 40 years old.
