★★★★★★Know the rules
Arizona lets handymen take on small jobs without a contractor license, within limits. Here is what the law says, and how we make sure your job is handled by the right pro.
Arizona does not have a handyman license. Instead, state law exempts small jobs from the contractor licensing requirement. This is known as the handyman exemption, found in Arizona Revised Statutes § 32-1121(A)(14). Any work that falls outside it has to be done by a contractor licensed through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC).
The exemption is a good thing for homeowners. It means you can hire a handyman for the everyday repairs and installs on your list without paying contractor prices. It also has clear limits, and a good handyman knows where they are.
The law
The price of the whole project, including labor, materials and everything else, must be less than $1,000.
The exemption is for small, incidental jobs, not major construction or remodeling.
If the work requires a local building permit, the exemption does not apply at any price.
A larger project cannot be broken into several smaller contracts to stay under the limit.
Hardwired or interconnected smoke alarms and fire sprinklers are excluded.
A handyman who advertises must include the words "not a licensed contractor" in the advertising.
How we work
6 Star Properties AZ LLC is a handyman service, not a licensed contractor, and we are fully insured for your protection. Most of what homeowners, landlords and rental hosts need fits well within the handyman exemption: replacing light fixtures, ceiling fans, switches and outlets, swapping faucets and toilet parts, mounting TVs, hanging art and shelves, assembling furniture, caulking, painting touch-ups and small repairs.
When a job needs more than that, we tell you up front. For bigger electrical and plumbing jobs and permitted work, we work with licensed electricians and plumbers, including pressure regulators, water softeners and in-wall leaks. You get one point of contact and the right pro for each part of the job.
